Manuskript is a writing program with which you build a longer story in smaller parts. You can organize chapters and scenes, create summaries and save data on characters. This gives more structure than one document in which all the notes and chapters are mixed.

You can first work out the layout and then write the separate parts. Storylines and notes stay with the project, so you can find out why you scheduled a scene while writing. The distraction-poor editor helps when you want to focus on the text. For the final exchange or publication, export your work to a suitable document format.

Manus kript is still in development. This is relevant when you want to put a whole manuscript in it: keep your own backup copies and make regular readable exports. A project file is useful for the structure, but an additional text export helps if you want to continue later with another editor. Therefore, start with a short story before transferring a large existing project.

Who is it for?

You write fiction or another long story and want to keep scenes, characters and plot notes together. For a letter or simple report, an ordinary word processor is arranged more quickly.

Getting started

Choose the Windows release or a Linux package on the official download page. Unpack a Windows archive completely and create your first project in a folder from which you save backups.

Privacy

You work with local project files. If you keep it in a synchronized folder, the cloud service also determines where the content ends up. A local write program doesn't even make a backup copy outside your computer.

Manuskript is especially helping the step from loose ideas to a coherent story. The structure is the reason to choose it above an ordinary word processor; another program may be more suitable for final formatting. The development stage requires careful storage. Use short pilot projects to determine whether the format fits your writing method and export important text regularly. This way you keep the benefits of a writing environment without making your only copy dependent on one project file.
