Files is an alternative to Windows Explorer. You can open folders in tabs and put two locations next to each other. This helps when you move files from a download folder to an archive or want to run two folders. You need to open fewer separate windows and reposition them.

You can organize files with tags and customize the view to your preferences. Cloud folders and network paths remain part of your existing storage: Files is a file manager and does not provide additional cloud space. As a result, functions and availability depend on the installed cloud service and the accessibility of your network.

The developers offer a paid Microsoft Store release to support the project. You can also find other download options via the official website. You do not need to set Files as the default file manager immediately. First use it next to Explorer and check your usual actions, especially quick menu entries from other program folders and access to shared folders.

Getting started

On the official download page, choose the stable release and view the other download options if you do not want to install via the Microsoft Store. Leave the preview release if you're looking for stability.

Privacy

Files works with the locations you open. Cloud and network folders also include the data processing and access rights of those services. A tag or other order does not protect a file from access by others.

Please note

Check after setting up as default file manager or folder links and quick menu folders continue to work. A file manager is not a backup; you need to be able to recover deleted or overwritten files elsewhere.

Our verdict

Files is especially worthwhile when you put lots of windows next to each other in Explorer. The split view and tabs can make those operations more clear. You don't have to take over all the links immediately: using Explorer is a good way to see if the control suits you. When you switch to network paths and quick menus, especially when you use them daily. To only open a file occasionally, the additional possibilities are less necessary.
