Dino is a desktop chat program for the XMPP network, also known as Jabber. You use an account with an XMPP provider and can communicate with people at other compatible providers. As a result, you are not bound by one central platform or the same app as all your contacts.

The interface focuses on conversations, file sharing and functions such as comments and answers. You can also make audio and video calls if the relevant software and infrastructure support that. The precise possibilities depend not only on Dino, but also on the other chat client and the chosen server.

For messages, Dino supports OMEMO and OpenPGP. Check per call whether end-to-end encryption is active and if your contact's devices have been correctly recognized. You can disable text cards and type messages, possibly per contact. This way you better determine which signals you share while chatting.

Who is it for?

You use Linux and want to work with an open chat standard. Dino suits a family, association or group who consciously chooses XMPP; you cannot directly open an existing WhatsApp conversation with it.

Getting started

Install Dino from the package management of your Linux distribution. Then add your XMPP account and check the connection and desired encryption with a contact.

Privacy

With enabled end-to-end encryption, message content and transport can be better separated from each other. Your provider still processes data needed to handle connections and messages. Check the encryption per call.

Our verdict

Dino is especially a good choice if you already use XMPP or want to switch there with a group. The app keeps the operation clear while maintaining the freedom of different providers. That freedom does require alignment: check with your contacts which functions your clients support together. For a group that only uses one existing commercial messenger, Dino is not a replacement you can enter without consultation. If open standards and a Linux desktop are central, it fits correctly.
