Gajim is focused on the XMPP protocol. You choose an account on an XMPP server and use the client for calls and groups. Modern XMPP features depend on both the client and the server and other participants.

OMEMO can encrypt message content when the used clients and call form support it. Check keys and device trust. A server with limited support can affect synchronization, files and history.

Choose an XMPP account and the client separately

Gajim is the client you use your account with. Your XMPP provider also determines which storage, upload and other server functions are available. Test with a contact or messages, files and desired encryption work. Our verdict

Gajim is a logical choice if you consciously choose XMPP. The specialized approach makes it easier to use the capabilities of that protocol than with a general client with many old network plugins. You also keep freedom in the choice of a server.

That freedom does require a careful combination. Check that your server supports the features you expect and that your contacts have the same encryption capabilities. Test history and file transfer before moving a group. For an existing XMPP community, Gajim can connect well; for people who want to reach their current commercial chat contacts in particular, a protocol transition is a bigger step.
