ART stands for Another RawTherapee and focuses on RAW development. You can customize lighting, colour and detail before exporting an ordinary image. The source photo remains the starting point; development settings determine the final output.

Camera support depends on the RAW format and used decoder. Therefore, check a file from your own camera before transferring a complete process. ART is not a program for extensive page layout or multi-track illustration with text objects.

Use the official ART project download for your system and test a RAW file from your camera. Save output in a separate folder.

Privacy

Your RAW files are processed locally. When exporting, check which metadata is included in the final JPEG or TIFF.

Good to know

Not every new camera format is directly supported. ART and RawTherapee have separate releases and development choices.

You get recovery for stain removal and better support for lens corrections in Nikon NEF files.

Memory problems when sliding and zooming while removing stains are solved.
ART can process the embedded correction data of Nikon Z cameras from NEF files, including data for distortion and vignettering.
The dynamic range compression has accelerated. The scale for PQ and HLG curves and a corresponding colour profile have been corrected.

Our verdict

ART is interesting if you want to decide for yourself how a RAW recording is developed. You can adjust the photo from the available source information and do not have to limit it to the JPEG that made the camera. That gives room for targeted lighting and color choices.

The added value only comes out when you want to learn how to use those settings. Start with a few representative photos and compare exports on an appropriate screen. Save the originals and development profiles, so you can start over later. If you're looking for automatic cloud organization or quick social filters, another type of photo app better connects to your needs.
