Aegis Authenticator creates the one-time codes you enter next to your password on many websites. You add an account by scanning the QR code of the service or entering the corresponding key. The app supports both time-bound TOTP codes and counter-based HOTP codes.

You keep your accounts in a safe that you can encrypt with a password. Biometric unlocking makes daily use easier on a suitable Android device. Groups, icons and different views help you find the right code when you have a lot of accounts.

An important part is the management of backup copies. You can export data, import it from other authenticator apps and set automatic backups. After adding an important account, check that it also goes into your backup. A backup that's only on the same phone doesn't help if that phone is lost.

Who is it for?

You use Android and want to manage verification codes yourself, with a local safe and control over exports. Aegis fits well if you deliberately want to set up a recovery option before switching phones.

Getting started

Use the Google Play, F-Droid or GitHub link from the official website. Set up the safe, add an account and check the code before deleting an old registration.

Privacy

The verification records are in your own vault. Choose a strong safe password and an encrypted export if you keep a backup outside your phone. Anyone who can read the secret keys can also generate verification codes.

Save the recovery codes of your online accounts separately. Do not delete your old authenticator until you have successfully logged in with Aegis and created a useful backup.

Our verdict

Aegis is a strong choice if you want to keep control of your second login. Especially the combination of an encrypted safe and export capabilities makes switching and restoring plans better. The app doesn't take over that planning from you: without saved backup or recovery codes, losing your phone can still cause problems. Therefore, first set up your recovery route and then add your main accounts. Choose another authenticator if you also need the same app on an iPhone or desktop.
