WinMerge puts versions of text files next to each other and marks their differences. You will see which lines have been added, deleted or modified. This helps with configuration files, exported data and documents in plain text that you want to know exactly what changed.

You can also compare complete folders, with or without subfolders. Note the comparison method: only comparing file size and date is faster, but does not prove that the content is the same. Filters help to keep temporary files or other irrelevant parts out of view.

Merge changes your files. Therefore, first check the direction in which you take a change and work on copies for important data. WinMerge also supports image and table comparison. It is not a continuous backup service; you choose what you compare and what changes you save.

Who is it for?

You want to compare two versions or folders checked, for example after a manual transfer or change of configuration files.

Getting started

Choose the official Windows package. First, open two copies of a text file and try to take over a single change before performing a large folder comparison.

Privacy

WinMerge compares files at the locations you open yourself. A network folder or cloud directory can of course be covered by the access rules of that storage service.

Good to know

Wrong alignment can overwrite data. No automatic backup. Complex filters require attention

Please note

Check left and right before taking over changes. A quick comparison by date and size is less thorough than comparing content.

Our verdict

WinMerge is valuable when you don't want to overwrite blindly but want to see exactly what's different. The power lies in the combination of comparison and selective take-over. First select an appropriate method of comparison and make a copy in case of irreplaceable data. For continuous synchronization, a synchronizing program is more logical; for targeted control WinMerge gives more insight.
