Upscayl Desktop magnifies images with AI models running on your own computer. You choose a source file, a model and an output folder. The program calculates a larger image with additional details. This can be useful for small illustrations or images that you want to use in a larger size.

You can process multiple files at once and compare different models. The lens view helps to see the result up close. You can also use your own suitable NCNN models if you want more control over the type of enlargement. The desktop software is independent of the paid online services offered under the same name.

Extra pixels are not the same as recovered original details. With faces, small text and fine patterns, the model can add something that was not in the original. Therefore, always save the source file and review the result to true size before printing or publishing it.

Who is it for?

You want to enlarge small images and have a suitable graphic chip. You are looking for a local method of illustrations, old web images or a series of images.

Getting started

Install Upscayl Desktop and update your GPU driver if necessary. First, paste one image into a separate folder. If that works well, you can try a series of files or another model.

Privacy

The desktop models process images locally. The app has update control settings and optional usage statistics. Any cloud variant has different data processing than the local desktop app.

Good to know

The hardware and GPU driver determine whether the processing is working properly. AI can add unnatural details, text errors or sharp edges.

Please note

You need a suitable Vulkan-able GPU and operating drivers. Do not treat generated details as reliable evidence of what was originally on a photo.

Our verdict

Upscayl is useful when a small image has just too little resolution for your intended use. The local processing is pleasant and you can experiment without a cloud subscription. The most important thing remains visual control: a larger file is not automatically a better image. Preferably compare multiple models and assess the result in the format in which you will actually use it.
