TuxGuitar is an editor for multi-voice tablature. You write down lots, divide music over tracks and listen back whether the rhythm and the notes are right. You can open Guitar Pro, Power Tab, TablEdit and MIDI files, depending on the supported format.

The program is useful for practicing a song or recording your own idea. Replay helps to find errors, but the sound is not equal to a real guitarist: articulation and used sound banks influence the result. Always check sizes, tempo and special playing techniques for imported lots.

As of version 2, TuxGuitar uses a new file format. Older TuxGuitar versions cannot read that directly. You can export to the older format when you want to share a batch with someone with an older version. Save your own editable original next to such exports.

Getting started

Choose the official release for your system. Open a short batch, check the sound output and save your own copy before editing an imported file.

Privacy

You can store lots as local files. An online source where you collect tablature processes your visit separately; also take into account the rights to shared music.

New format requires attention in sharing. Playback is not a realistic execution. Packages are not all signed

Our verdict

TuxGuitar offers a lot for writing and practicing guitar parts. Especially the combination of seeing and listening back helps to control a rhythm. The most important consideration is compatibility: check an imported file and choose the format when sharing consciously. For a professional sounding production you also need other instruments or audio software; TuxGuitar is very useful for capturing the party itself.
