Tuta Mail combines an email service with its own apps. You create a Tuta account and use that mailbox via the browser or a supported app. So it's not a general IMAP client in which you add any existing Gmail or other mailbox.

Between Tuta users, content can be automatically exchanged end-to-end encrypted. For an external recipient you can use a confidential message with a shared password. I want you to get that password out of another channel. Ordinary e-mail to an external mailbox does not automatically receive the same protection as an encrypted call within Tuta.

The free and paid subscriptions differ, among other things, in storage and additional account options. Before switching, determine whether you need your own domain, additional addresses or business functions. Also keep your recovery data outside of your only registered device, so that a phone or computer failure does not immediately endanger your access.

You want a mailbox where encryption is built into the service and your own apps, and you are willing to use a Tuta account.

Getting started

Create a Tuta account and save your recovery code. Then download the desired official client and test both ordinary mail and a confidential message to your own second address.

Privacy

The protection differs between internally encrypted messages, password protected external messages and ordinary external email. Secure your account and recovery data; encryption does not prevent a recipient from sharing content further.

No ordinary IMAP link. Change to your own Tuta account. Additional storage and account functions may have been paid

Please note

You use your own Tuta clients and cannot set the mailbox as a regular IMAP mailbox in any other client. Free and paid accounts have different limits.

Our verdict

Tuta Mail is interesting if you want to choose a secure mailbox as a whole, including the way you use it. That coherence is also the limitation: you stay with your own clients and working methods. Therefore, check your domain, contacts and archive needs before switching. Particular attention should be paid to the difference between an encrypted external message and ordinary email. If that method is in place, Tuta offers a clearer setup than single encryption parts afterwards.
