Syncthing Tray gives Syncthing a control from the system tray and a graphical interface. You will see which folders are updated, which devices are connected and whether errors occur. This is useful if you already use Syncthing but do not want to open the web interface for every check.

The configuration wizard can connect to an existing Syncting installation or help you start Syncing. Several packages deliver the synchronization engine. The possibilities vary from platform to build; on Linux, for example, there are additional integrations for KDE Plasma and Dolphin. Choose the package that belongs to your desktop.

There is also an Android release. Access to folders, background restrictions and energy management play an important role. A synchronization program can only update files when it is allowed to run and reach the selected locations. Synchronization also remains something other than backup: a deletion or wrong modification can be passed on to your other device. Set version manager or separate backup for important files.

You use Syncing or want to set it up and look for a better view of progress. Especially on Windows and KDE you can perform many daily operations from the desktop.

Getting started

Choose the official package for your system and use the wizard to connect an existing or new Syncing installation. Next, connect a temporary folder between two devices.

Privacy

The data exchange runs through Syncing and the devices you connect. The discovery, relays and access rights settings also determine which connections are used. Protect the management interface and do not share your API key.

First connect a sample folder. Synchronization can also spread removals. The Android release has been tested on a limited number of devices and requires background and storage permission control.

Our verdict

Syncing Tray especially adds ease of use around Syncing. You can see faster if devices are connected and less often need to go to the web interface. It is therefore an addition to the synchronization technique, not another storage service. When installing, check that you have already run a Syncthing process to avoid double configurations. Important documents will require a separate recovery plan. With a small trial folder you can safely check how to pause, resume and report errors in your package working.
