SuperTux is a 2D platform game in which you walk and jump through levels with the penguin Tux. You avoid enemies, collect objects and find your way through obstacles. The game is open source and you can download it without a paid game subscription.

The issue 0.7.0 renews the story and different areas. In addition, you can play with others locally and create your own challenges with the level editor. This allows you not only to go through the supplied levels, but also to explore how a platform level is built up.

The recognizable form does not mean that each level is easy by itself. Timing and learning to recognize enemies remain part of the game. Play with a child, then try a starting level together and set the controls in that jumping and moving go comfortably.

Who is it for?

You like classic platform games or seek a free game to play locally. The editor is also interesting if you want to practice with level design.

Getting started

Choose the package for your system. Set the control and start story mode. Use an appropriate package on Linux: the official AppImage mentions glibc 2.38 as a basis.

Privacy

You do not have to set up a social profile or online multiplayer service for playing locally. Share your home-made levels or use your external extras, then check which files and data you exchange.

Good to know

Older story savegames are not directly interchangeable with the new version. Tougher levels require exercise and precise timing.

Please note

Old story progress and beta save games are not easily usable in 0.7.0. Save existing saves before switching.

Our verdict

SuperTux is a nice choice if you are deliberately looking for a classic platform game. The local multiplayer and editor give you different ways to work on it, without having to set up a store account first. Expect a game in which practice is part of the design. For existing players it is wise to approach the renewed story mode as a fresh start and keep old progress separately.
