Restic Browser displays a window to a part of the restic mode: view and restore existing backups. You open a repository, choose a snapshot and browse folders and files. For an occasional recovery, you do not have to formulate all the assignments yourself.

The program does not create a complete new backup plan for you. You will continue to use restic or other appropriate management tools. You also need the repository's location, access data and any decryption data. The graphical interface cannot restore a forgotten password.

You can restore files to a selected folder or run a selection like ZIP. Opening a file can create a temporary local copy. Please take this into account for confidential data and restore to a separate folder first, so that you can check the result before replacing your current files.

Getting started

Download the official build for your system, open an existing restic repository and choose a snapshot. First, restore an insignificant file to a new folder.

Privacy

The app connects to the repository you set up. Restored and temporarily opened files are located locally outside the encrypted backup; therefore, also secure the computer on which you recover.

Good to know

Only for existing restic-repositories. Doesn't make any new backup planning. Temporary copies call attention to sensitive files

Our verdict

Restic Browser especially adds ease when you need to get something back. That is a useful addition to a good restic set-up, but not a replacement. Pre-test whether your repository opens and whether you can recover a file, so that you do not check it out only during a malfunction. To set up your first backup, a full backup app makes more sense; for targeted recovery, this limited interface can be clear.
