OpenMPT is a Windows music tracker. You build music from patterns with notes, instruments and effects. That table-like method differs from a common piano role, but gives you detailed control over timing and repetition.

You can work with tracker formats and export music to ordinary audio files. Samples and supported plug-ins expand your sound capabilities. Save a project and export a listening file are separate steps; keep the project if you want to change notes later.

You get solutions for MIDI input, channel control and loading modules.

OpenMPT 1.32.11.00 starts the MIDI service on Windows 11 earlier to avoid crashing when first using MIDI. Also, a crash in channel control, the display of processed parameter rows and loading GT2 files have been restored.

OpenMPT is interesting if you are curious about making music via patterns instead of a traditional timeline. You can see notes and effects close together, which makes repetition and variation very precise to build up. This fits well with electronic music and studying existing modules.

The learning curve is mainly in notation and shortcuts. Start with a small pattern and a few samples, not with a complete set of plugins. That's how you find out if this process helps you. If you especially want to record and mount live audio, then a regular audio or MIDI sequencer fits better with that task.
