This is useful if you want to be recreational and use electronic maps consciously for preparation and support. It suits you if you want to set up map sources and equipment. Without navigation knowledge and an alternative way to determine your position, only this software is not enough preparation.

Practice using maps and route points without sailing on them. Check card licenses, current events and the link with your equipment.

Routes, tracks and waypoints can reveal home ports and recurring movements. Check those files before you share them. Map downloads and plugins have their own connections and suppliers. Set network access only for equipment and services you really need.

You do not automatically receive current sea charts included. Do not rely on one device or program for safe navigation.

Maps are not automatically included or up to date for each area. AIS shows only received information and not every object on the water. Also check course and environment independently and take into account power failure, position source or laptop. Do not use an outdated card as the only basis for an important shipping decision.

OpenCPN is a tool for map display and route preparation on the water. With appropriate connections you can also use position and AIS data. The usability depends heavily on current maps, correct input and your own navigation knowledge. A clear view on a laptop does not in itself guarantee that a route is safe or the position received is correct.

Review the complete combination of maps, position source and equipment; the installation of the app is only one component. Check the location with known points and view waypoints separately before you become dependent on data on the go. For safe navigation, a self-assessment remains necessary. A planned line on the map does not support independently that all conditions on that route are appropriate.
