In Neverball you tilt a playing field to steer a ball past obstacles, collect coins and reach the exit in time.

Neverball is all about control of movement. You don't control the ball directly, you tilt the surface. As a result, direction and speed constantly change. You have to look forward, slow down in time and take into account narrow paths or moving parts. A small correction often works better than a large steering movement.

In the levels you collect enough coins to open the exit. The time limit ensures that you have to choose a route instead of quietly searching every corner. You can practice with different modes of operation, including mouse and game pad. The camera is an important part of your orientation and requires a bit of habitation.

The download package also includes Neverputt, a mini golf game with a different way of aiming and moving. The stable desktop release of Neverball is 1.6.0. The official macOS download is older and does not belong to that version; this is why Windows and Linux are included as a platform. Newer development versions are not the same as the stable release.

Who is it for?

You're looking for a game of skill in which you gain better control through practice. Neverball suits short play sessions and players who like to try a tricky route again.

Getting started

On Windows, unpack the official ZIP file completely. On Linux, use a distribution kit or build the source code. After starting set up the control and screen view.

Privacy

The desktop levels you play locally. To download additional levels, visit separate websites or a forum. Open only content from a source you trust.

Please note

The stable desktop version is old and the macOS download is further behind. The combination of camera movement and tilting can be unpleasant if you are sensitive to moving image.

Our verdict

Neverball is suitable if you want a game in which your own skill is clearly growing. The rules are simple, but precise steering under time pressure makes later levels difficult. Start with a quiet mouse sensitivity and learn how the camera reacts before you play at speed. It is less appropriate if you are looking especially for relaxation without repeated attempts. The included miniwave variant offers variety, while the limited recent desktop development is a reason to first check compatibility on your system.
