LibrePCB is design software for electronic circuits and printed circuit boards. You start with a schematic that captures components and connections. Then you place the corresponding parts on a circuit board and work out the copper connections. Libraries link symbols to the appropriate component and enclosure information.

For a first project, a simple circuit is a better starting point than a large multilayer print. Check with each component that the connections and the footprint match the real component you're going to buy. A similar name or drawing is not enough.

Before you have a design produced, check the manufacturer's rules and capabilities and view the exported files. Automatic checks help find errors, but do not prove that your circuit is working properly. LibrePCB supports design; knowledge of electronics and control of your own design remain necessary.

Use the official download page and choose installer, bundle or portable package for your system. First make a small schematic and check the component libraries before working out the print.

Privacy

You can save projects locally. Retrieving libraries or using external production services entails network connections and the conditions of those services.

Good to know

Asks for knowledge of electronics. Footprints should fit real parts. Automatic checks do not prove a working circuit

Please note

Check pins, footprints and production rules before ordering. An error in a library selection can also end up in an apparently neat print.

Our verdict

LibrePCB fits well with a hobby project for which you want to create a print and monitor the connection between schema and parts. It helps build structure, but doesn't automatically make an error component correct. Start with a small design and check the production files as if you're judging them for someone else. This method results in more than just trying a complicated print. For experienced designers, the library and project design is especially worth comparing.
