KDiskMark is a benchmark for hard drives and SSD drives on Linux. The program uses fio to perform various read and write tasks and shows the results in a graphic window. You can adjust test size, queue and number of tasks or start presets.

Sequential transfer and small random operations measure different properties. A high speed for large files does not automatically say that a disk also performs well with many small requests. Therefore, compare the same test settings and close other heavy disk activities during your measurement.

A benchmark writes test data and charges your storage. He does not check that your important files are safe and is not a replacement for information about the health of a drive. Use a modest test size, keep free space and do not test on a disk that already shows obvious malfunctions before you secure your data.

Who is it for?

You use Linux and want to compare storage performance, for example before and after replacing an SSD or USB enclosure.

Getting started

Install a current package via the official project links or your distribution. Choose a folder on the intended disk and start with a modest test size.

Privacy

The test works at the selected local storage location. A shared report may contain system and storage information; view that data before publishing it.

Good to know

Measure speed, not the health of your disc. Background tasks influence results. Old Snap package gets no updates

Please note

The tests load the disk and write data. According to the project, the Snap package is no longer maintained; choose a current distribution or project release.

Our verdict

KDiskMark makes it easier to repeat the same storage tests on Linux. This is especially useful when comparing connections, enclosures or discs. The outcome will only be meaningful if you keep settings and conditions the same. Do not use it as proof that a disk is still reliable: a fast SSD may still fail. For most comparisons, a limited test is sufficient instead of repeating very large amounts of data writing.
