IINA is a media player for macOS with mpv as a playback base. You open a variety of local audio and video files without first building a media library. The buttons, windows and keyboard shortcuts connect to using a Mac. This allows you to quickly view a file and at the same time set more extensively how it is played.

You can load subtitles, choose the sound and subtitle track and adjust the playback control. Picture-in-picture is useful when you want to keep a video in view while working in another program. For music there is a smaller control, so that a large video window is not always needed.

IINA can also open online media, but support depends on the source and additional parts. As a result, a video website that works in Safari does not have to work automatically in IINA. For your own movies, recordings and music files the lack of a mandatory online library is pleasant: you open what you want to view and keep your files organized yourself.

Who is it for?

You use a Mac and want to play local video and music with more features than the default player. IINA fits especially if you regularly use subtitles or multiple audio tracks.

Getting started

Download the official DMG, open it and place IINA in your program folder. For a video file, choose IINA as the default program and then check the subtitle preferences.

Privacy

Local media stays on your Mac when you play them locally. Online streams, subtitle services and update checks connect to external servers. Also keep in mind saved recent files on a shared Mac.

IINA is a strong choice for your own video files on a Mac. You get the flexibility of mpv without having to look up settings or commands for every action. The added value is mainly in subtitles, track selection and the trusted Mac control. Do not use it as a replacement for any streaming service: secure video and changing websites remain a restriction. Keep the player updated because also links that open a video can cause security issues.
