Hedgewars is a tactical game in which teams of hedgehogs try to disable each other with various weapons. You get time to move, pick a position and attack. Distance, terrain and orbit of a projectile count as well. A powerful attack can also put your own team in a difficult situation.

The landscape is destructive. A safe place can be gone after a few turns, while a crater offers new shelter. You can play locally, practice against computer-driven opponents or start a game online. Missions and campaigns give you a different way to know the weapons and rules of the game.

The official desktop download for Windows and macOS is version 1.0.0. The project also offers newer source packages with building corrections, allowing a Linux package to have a different number. Check out which version your fellow players use when playing online. Start with the practice possibilities: directing and estimating movement is an important part of the game.

Who is it for?

You like tactical games where you take turns acting and a failed attack can also turn out funny. For joint playing on one computer, the turn structure is useful.

Getting started

Download the package for your platform via the official website. Start a training mission first and set the controls. On Linux, use the package management of your distribution if you do not want to compile yourself.

Privacy

Local play does not require connection to a game server. In online games, your connection and the chosen player name are visible to the relevant service or players. Do not share personal data in the chat.

Our verdict

Hedgewars is especially fun if you want to take time for a move and appreciate unexpected consequences. The changing terrain prevents a match from being solely about the strongest attack. You also have to think about where you're gonna stay after that. For a first game, playing locally with simple rules is more accessible than instantly an online game. The age of the desktop release is a focus, but the game setup remains suitable for short, joint sessions.
