Duplicity is backup software for those who want to manage commands and planning themselves. The program creates archives of your files and can automatically save subsequent changes. As a result, after the first full backup you don't have to change everything again and again.

GnuPG allows you to encrypt and sign backups. The necessary key and recovery data must be stored separately: a correctly stored archive does not help when you cannot decrypt it after a malfunction. The supported storage methods work via backends with their own dependencies and login data.

You set up yourself when full backups take place and which older sets may disappear. Incremental archives form a chain; so do not delete loose files from storage on good luck. Test recovery to an empty folder and also check the situation where your original computer is no longer available.

Getting started

Install Duplicity and the required backend dependencies via your Linux distribution or project. First create a small encrypted backup and restore it to another folder.

Privacy

Encryption can shield the contents for your storage provider. File volumes, times and account data may still be visible; save keys outside the only backup location.

Good to know

No simple default desktop wizard. Key management is with you. Recovery depends on a complete backup chain

Please note

Loss of the decryption key can make recovery impossible. Do not remove loose parts from an incremental backup chain.

Our verdict

Duplicity is suitable when you want to control commands, storage and encryption and carry that responsibility. For a novice user, a graphical backup app is usually easier to check. The decisive test is not whether the upload succeeds, but whether you can recover on another machine with the data you have saved. Set up that test before you clean up old backups.
