Drawing is a simple image editor for Linux. You can draw, add text, make a selection and crop an image or resize it. The control focuses on single operations that you want to perform quickly, such as clarifying a screenshot or making a too large image smaller.

The program connects to the GNOME environment, but also supports other Linux desktops. You work with common image files and don't have to create an extensive project with dozens of settings. This makes Drawing accessible when you miss a simple drawing program.

The simplicity has limits. Drawing is not a full replacement for an extensive layered editor, RAW development or accurate color management. Save the original before shrinking a photo or making a cut, so you can start again later. For explanations and minor corrections, this limited design is precisely clear.

Who is it for?

You use Linux and search for a simple program for drawing, cropping and annotating. For professional photo editing or complex compositions you need a more extensive editor.

Getting started

Use the package from your Linux software store or the official Flatpak reference. First, open a copy of your image and select a format that fits transparency and quality when saving.

Privacy

You edit local images without mandatory cloud service. Please note names, addresses and other data that may appear in the image when screen shots. Saving an image does not automatically mean that all metadata have been deleted.

Preferably edit a copy. Magnifying does not make a small image sharper, and transparency may be lost when choosing a format that does not support it.

Our verdict

Drawing is a good addition when a large image editor requires too many steps for a small change. You can quickly explain an image or customize it, without first digging into a complex workspace. Choose it consciously for those simple tasks. For recurring photo editing where you want to modify operations later, layers and other non-destructive methods offer more space. Therefore save your original file and use Drawing especially for clear, rounded operations.
