Delta Chat gives you a chat interface on top of an open network based on email technology. You can create a chat profile and invite others, without everyone having to join one central chat service. The desktop edition has its own version numbers; the version shown on this page is part of that desktop software.

You conduct conversations and group treasures and can read messages on multiple devices. QR codes help to link and invite. The app further develops features such as channels and comments, while the recognizable chat view remains central. You don't have to manage the technical transport layer during every call.

See how your profile is decorated. A modern chatmail profile and a traditional email account are not the same. The possibilities of your partner also play a role. Use the security information on your call to check how it's protected, rather than assuming that any email message has the same properties.

Getting started

Download the desktop release for your system. Create a profile according to the start assistant or connect your existing profile. Check with a trusted contact if messages arrive on your devices.

Privacy

Delta Chat supports end-to-end encrypted calls. The chosen server and profile type remain relevant for connection data and delivery. Check the security level of your call, especially when you also communicate with ordinary email addresses.

The possibilities vary between chatmail and traditional email profiles. The desktop and mobile app have separate versions.

Keep recovery and profile data carefully. Do not delete a profile until you know how to get your conversations back on another device.

You get clearer reactions, improved notifications and recovery for camera performances and portable use.

  • Reactions are grouped by emoji with numbers and refresh immediately. On some platforms notifications are grouped by call.
  • Adding a relay shows progress and can be cancelled. Switching between profiles is faster.
  • Cameras are back on Linux systems with PipeWire. The Windows portable also stores the Electron cache in the portable folder and does not register as a protocol handler.

Delta Chat is an interesting choice if you want to be more independent from one chat platform. The added value lies in the combination of an ordinary chat service and open transport. The profile choice deserves attention: use the recommended device and check your conversations before sharing sensitive information. If you're only looking for a full email calendar and business mailbox features, a traditional mail client fits better.
