CrystalMark Retro combines tests for CPU, disk, 2D via GDI and 3D through OpenGL. You can run parts separately or start the whole sequence. There are packages for various Windows generations and processor architectures.

You can register and compare results optionally in CrystalMarkDB. Use the same test version and similar settings. Especially with old PCs, background processes, drivers and storage settings make a big difference in the outcome.

A benchmark is especially useful when you capture the circumstances. Close unnecessary background tasks and record energy plan, hardware and storage. In this way you can better judge later whether a difference is due to a change or another test condition.

A total score sums up several parts and can therefore conceal a specific bottleneck. Check out the individual results. Compare only measurements carried out according to the same procedure and do not use a score as the only measure for everyday convenience.

Compare CrystalMark Retro with alternatives

Compare benchmarks only under similar conditions: the same test version, energy settings and background load. A total score does not give a complete view of one specific app. So look at part tests for the parts that are important to your work.

Our verdict

CrystalMark Retro is interesting if you want to put different generations of Windows hardware side by side. The individual tests show better which part changes then only a total score.

Keep drivers, energy settings and background tasks as equal as possible. Do not compare scores from different test methods as if they are measuring the same. For retro hardware the wide support is attractive, but an OpenGL or GDI result says little about all effects in a modern game. Use the numbers to measure these specific tests and combine them with the apps you actually use.
