CopyQ is most useful when you move several pieces of information between applications: a reference number, an address, a standard reply and a screenshot, for example. Instead of returning to the source after each paste, you can retrieve earlier items from the history. Separate tabs can keep reusable snippets apart from temporary captures, which makes a busy clipboard easier to search and less likely to become an unstructured archive.

A practical way to get started

Begin with a small collection of non-sensitive examples. Copy text and an image, filter the history, edit a text item and paste it into your usual destination application. Create one tab for reusable material and assign a convenient shortcut for opening CopyQ. Before adding scripts, check whether ordinary tabs, search and editing already solve the task; automation is easier to maintain when it has a clear purpose.

What to consider before choosing

A clipboard manager retains information that would otherwise be temporary. Review what gets saved, the history size and the exclusion rules, especially on a shared computer. Do not treat the history as a password manager. On Linux, clipboard access and global shortcuts can depend on the desktop session, particularly Wayland; verify those two actions on your own setup before relying on CopyQ throughout the day.
