Conversations is an Android chat app for the open XMPP network. You use an account with a suitable XMPP provider instead of a mandatory account with one central chat service. Your contacts should also be accessible via XMPP; the app does not automatically connect to WhatsApp or other closed networks.

You can exchange messages, images and files and participate in group calls. For encrypted calls, the OMEMO app supports. Check the support on both sides and the trusted devices when you share sensitive information. Securing a connection to your server is not the same as end-to-end encryption of a call.

The chosen server also determines storage, history and other functions. A good app cannot remove limitations from an unsuitable server. Therefore, first select a provider that supports the features you need and test a conversation with a contact before switching completely.

Our verdict

Conversations is a strong option if you consciously choose XMPP. The freedom to choose a provider is useful, but asks that you also look at its policy and technical support. For someone who only wants to reach existing WhatsApp contacts, the app does not solve that problem. Start with a small call and check encryption, notifications and file transfer before using the daily contact app.
