BleachBit offers cleaning rules for various programs and parts of your system. You choose whether you want to delete a cache, history or other temporary files. The example function shows what a command will hit before you execute it. This is important, because removing cookies can log out and a cache grows again after use. The app is not a universal accelerator for a slow computer. The profit depends on what data is actually redundant and how much disk space they take. Advanced erasing functions require extra caution.

Who is it for?

You use BleachBit if you want to clean up and understand which data you delete. For only a full Windows drive you can first view the built-in storage settings.

Getting started

Download the appropriate Windows or Linux version. Start with ordinary user rights and use more extensive permissions only if you want to consciously clean up system data.

Privacy

Cleaning functions work locally and do not request registration. Erasing local browser data does not automatically delete data that a website or cloud service has stored about you.

Good to know

Cleaned-up caches can grow again as soon as you use programs. Removing it does not resolve a lack of memory or a defective disk.

Please note

Do not blindly select all options. Look at the example and close the affected apps first. Safely erasing an SSD has other limitations than on a classic hard drive.

Check again after an update which categories you have selected. New cleaning options are no reason to automatically check everything.

Our verdict

BleachBit is useful for targeted cleaning when you understand the selected categories. The example function deserves a fixed place in your method; checking as much as possible is not a good starting point.

Let a specific cleanup request determine the selection: which temporary data take up space and what do you expect to lose after erase? Look at the proposal before you carry out the action. If retention of registrations or other usage data is important, it is more important than a larger cleaning score. The app is not a substitute for investigating a slow PC and does not undo an unknown cause by itself.
