Beaver Notes stores your notes on your own device and supports Markdown for writing. You use folders and tags to organize topics and link related notes together. This fits with individual ideas, documentation and a knowledge collection that you want to keep without mandatory online service.

You can lock certain notes and choose your own synchronization mode. Working locally means that you also have to back up yourself. Therefore, test an export and restore it before adding a lot of important information. Synchronization with its own provider also brings the settings of that provider.

This download describes the stable 4.4.0 desktop release. Version 5 is developed separately and announced functions are not automatically part of this version. Easily start with some folders and links; a complex structure can make finding notes more difficult.

Who is it for?

You are looking for a note program for your own computer and do not want to create an account to start.

Getting started

Download the stable 4.4.0 release for your system. Create a test note with a tag and link and try an export before transferring existing notes.

Privacy

Notes remain local by default. In the case of a synchronization service, the processing of data also depends on that service. A locked note doesn't replace proper security on your computer.

Good to know

Backup's on your own. Synchronization requires your own choices. New beta functions are not self-contained in the stable version

Make your own backup and test the export. Manuals for the new 5-beta may differ from the stable 4.4.0 edition.

Our verdict

Beaver Notes is suitable if you are looking for a clear local note environment and would like to decide where your data is. The combination of folders, tags and links gives enough structure without directly needing a large online workspace. That freedom does require discipline around backups and synchronization. Test the transfer of a few notes and consciously choose the stable release when you want to build on reliability.
