AntennaPod is a podcast player for Android that manages subscriptions to podcast feeds. You can stream episodes or download them in advance. The latter is useful on the go or when you have a limited data bundle. You decide which episodes are queued and when you want to have downloads run.

You can import and export your subscriptions via OPML. That doesn't tie your podcast list to one listening service. You can also add a feed address directly, for example for a podcast you found on a website. The app is intended for podcasts offered via a usable feed; exclusive content in a closed platform is not automatically available.

While listening, you can adjust the playback speed and use a sleeptimer. Automatic downloads and cleanup rules help to control your storage. Check these settings first: a long list of daily podcasts can take up a lot of space if you have everything stored. You don't need a required AntennaPod account for local use.

Who is it for?

You listen to Android and want to decide where your podcasts come from. AntennaPod is suitable if you want to listen offline and simply take your subscriptions with you to another player.

Getting started

Open the Android store of your choice via the official website. Add a podcast or OPML file and then set downloads, storage limits and listen queue.

Privacy

Podcast files come from the provider's servers. They can see your IP address and download requests. An advertising-free player does not delete advertisements that the maker has included in the delivery itself.

Exclusive podcasts without accessible feed cannot be added. Preferably set automatic downloads to wifi and check how many episodes you save.

Our verdict

AntennaPod is especially attractive if you are looking for a podcast player in which your own subscriptions are central. OPML export prevents you from starting over when you switch later. The download and cleanup settings are at least as important as the playback buttons: this makes the app suitable for your phone and data bundle. Do not expect access to all exclusive podcasts of commercial services. This is a logical choice for public feeds and independently managed subscriptions.
